Your Habits Make You

In martial arts training, it is imperative to develop good habits. Good habits include the proper way of thinking, breathing, and performing. These good habits help you become healthier, more powerful, and a better person when you deploy your skills.

Clearly, there is no shortcut to doing this. You couldn't simply attend a weekend seminar on a yearly basis, and experience this personal growth. You might pick up some skills, but the skills will not become habit, nor would you become the kind of person who would use the skills in the right way.

There is a very interesting parallel for this in the financial world. Many people like to donate money to their favorite charity. It's one thing to simply just write them a check. You can do that at the end of the year, and simply get the job done.

It’s better to write small checks continually throughout the year, than one big one at the end of the year. This way you develop the giving habit, and become a more charitable person. Charitable giving becomes part of you. You are a better version of you when you support the charity of your choice, and that's what's most important.
