The Number Cruncher and Life Liver

by Angie Carlson |

Married couples – do you have the same financial goals but have no idea what it looks like to accomplish them? This post is for you.

From my experience, spouses tend to look at accomplishing the same goals in two different ways.
Typically, one of you in the relationship crunches numbers. Spreadsheets and calculators are your thing. This person has a rough idea of what the budget looks like through 2025. Since the goals are financial, it makes total sense that numbers would be involved. What else would be?

The other one likes to live life. Not in a crazy way though. Dinner out. Time with friends. Shopping. At the end of their life, they don’t want to look back and wish they had taken time to enjoy life while they had their health. They ARE focused on the financial goals; it may take a few months longer than the number cruncher planned. If we reach the goal, is a couple of extra months really that big of a deal?

Let me be clear – there is nothing wrong with either perspective.

And money will continue to be a source of tension in your marriage if only one perspective is allowed.

The other person feels like they don’t get a say, and that leaves them feeling neglected, unheard, and hurt.

No wonder money is a source of conflict in your marriage.

You have tried figuring out a timeline you can agree on.

You’ve tried understanding your spouse’s POV and unsure how it will help.

Thankfully, you don’t have to figure this out alone.

I help couples that struggle to communicate about money develop a plan where both of their perspectives are heard and welcomed.

When that happens, it is game on.

And the result usually happens faster than the number cruncher calculated.

Money goes from being a source of tension to a source of relaxation.

Allowing your ideal, shared future without financial stress to unfold.
