Would You Send Your Child to School With a Bulletproof Blanket?

Death is a fact of life and we each know that day will come eventually. To prepare for it, we buy life insurance so our loved ones, business interests, and heirs will be well taken care of.

Of course, while we prepare for death, we live life to its fullest. We do everything we can to tilt the odds in favor of a long, productive, satisfying life. That includes diet, exercise, outlook … the whole works.

On a societal level, we do what we can to eliminate life-threatening dangers. We attempt to eliminate diseases. We try to keep the roads safe. We strive hard to keep terror and war away from our door.

We also work on the internal threats. We make sure dangerous criminals are off the streets. We keep tabs on individuals who might show signs of violent inclinations. When tragedies do occur, such as mass shootings at schools, we think long and hard about preventing such incidents the next time around.

Such soul-searching inevitably brings up the question: how much of a concession do we make to the possibility that such a tragedy will happen again? On the one hand, we understand that mortal danger will probably never be eliminated. Bad stuff can and will happen.

On the other hand, we get the feeling that being too prepared is a way of giving up. If we focus too much on protecting ourselves, then it seems we are no longer trying to prevent the threat in the first place.

That brings us to a new product in the marketplace. Bulletproof blankets are now available for kids to take to school. In case that mass killer does show up, these items are supposed to give our children a fighting chance at survival.

Please read the article and tell me what you think. Is this a commonsense move, or are we throwing in the towel and making mass shootings inevitable?
